Model-year records

What the 2017 record can and cannot say

The 2017 record contains 2,698 submitted complaints. The median across this model's matched years is 545.5 reports. Neither number accounts for vehicle sales or time on the road. Source names: ESCAPE. NHTSA source snapshot: 2026-10-18.

Engine is the most common displayed component tag, with 1,579 reports (58.5% of this year's submitted complaints). One complaint can name several components. The share describes reports, not the probability of a failure.

Engine replacement or major internal repair has the highest arithmetic midpoint for parts in the applicable planning estimates, at $8,000 before labor. A paid plan can help only if the component and cause qualify; check existing manufacturer coverage first.

Engine & cooling

Manufacturer documented2017, 2018, 2019

Coolant intrusion into the cylinders

Low coolant paired with white exhaust or a rough cold start appears in Ford's documented 1.5L coolant-intrusion procedure.

Ford documented a condition in certain 2017 to 2019 Escape vehicles where coolant may enter a cylinder. The manufacturer procedure calls for confirmation testing and, where applicable, replacement of the short block and head gasket. This is not a diagnosis of every coolant loss complaint.

Symptoms to compare
  • Low coolant without an obvious external leak
  • White exhaust smoke, particularly after startup
  • Rough running or a persistent misfire
  • An illuminated malfunction indicator lamp

Other ways owners describe it: coolant keeps disappearing; white smoke from exhaust; engine shakes on startup; rough idle when cold; misfire after sitting; sweet smell from exhaust.

Diagnostic trouble codes: P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0316, P0217, P1285, P1299. A code identifies a condition to investigate, not a part to replace.

Which vehicles the source covers
  • 2017 to 2019 Ford Escape
  • 1.5L EcoBoost engine
  • Specific build dates apply and should be checked against the bulletin

The official bulletin is based on vehicle configuration and build date, not a stated mileage threshold. Mileage alone cannot confirm or exclude the condition.

Manufacturer position and diagnosis

Ford's published service procedure directs technicians to confirm the condition and replace the short block and head gasket when the bulletin criteria are met.

Manufacturer repair procedureDealer or engine specialist · Major repair

A Ford technician follows the published pressure and inspection procedure. Where the condition is confirmed and the vehicle meets the criteria, the bulletin specifies short block and head gasket replacement.

Limit: Coverage is VIN specific. A bulletin does not by itself promise a free repair.

Document the symptoms safelyBasic observation · 10 minutes

With the engine fully cold, photograph the coolant level and record any added coolant. Save a cold-start video and the diagnostic codes for the technician.

Limit: Never open a hot cooling system.

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:GEAR POSITION INDICATION (PRNDL): recall 22V413000

A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.

  • A make, model and year match does not establish VIN eligibility.

Safety recall eligibility is based on the VIN and campaign scope, not ordinary warranty mileage. Check the complete VIN even when the vehicle is outside its original warranty.

Evidence for this issue

Confirm who pays before authorizing work

A recall remedy follows the campaign and VIN eligibility. A service bulletin provides diagnosis or repair instructions; it does not by itself promise payment. Manufacturer warranty extensions and support programs have their own conditions.
