These seven model histories did not meet the award criteria. Their full year-by-year records are included in the evidence download.

The evidence behind the award

A specific finding.
A method you can check.

We reviewed 505 U.S. model-year records across 20 selected model histories. We matched NHTSA recall campaigns to those histories, accounting for nameplate aliases and gaps in U.S. model years.

The 13 recognized histories met the criteria below in the October 10, 2026 snapshot. This is not a market-wide ranking.

  1. At least five covered model years

A model history must include five or more covered U.S. model years to enter the award review.

  2. A consecutive run with zero mapped campaigns

At least three consecutive model years within 2000–2023 must have zero mapped recall campaigns. Model years 2024 and later are shown where covered, but cannot qualify.

  3. Recognition stays with the stated years

A Multi-Year Record Award recognizes the specified run. A Full-Run Record Award means every covered model year has zero mapped campaigns and the model also meets the eligibility criteria.

What a zero means

No recall campaign was mapped to that model year in this snapshot using our matching rules. Missing records, name variations or later recalls can change the result. Earlier records can be incomplete. A zero is not proof of a defect-free car.

Campaign counts do not measure how many vehicles are affected, the seriousness of a defect, or whether a particular car has been repaired. These awards do not assess complaints, repair frequency, crash performance or warranty value.

Sources and scope

The review combines NHTSA's pre-2010 and post-2010 recall files, with campaign IDs deduplicated within each model year. Model names, aliases and year coverage determine which records are included.

Edition and corrections

2026 is the award edition, not the vehicle model year. We choose the longest qualifying run; if two runs are equal, we use the earlier one.

Mercedes matching correction

On October 11, 2026, we excluded SL CLASS and SL-CLASS records from the SLK / SLC match. That changes its full-history total from 19 to 16 distinct campaigns. The recognized 2010–2012 run is unchanged. The evidence download retains the correction.

Checking a particular car?

Use its VIN for current recalls.

A historical model-year record cannot tell you whether your own car has an open recall. Check the vehicle identification number and follow the manufacturer's recall instructions.
