How we compare repair costs and warranties

We compare a warranty's full price and assumed out-of-pocket costs with an average-based repair budget. The result can show potential savings or an added cost. Public vehicle records provide background on reported problems. Neither those records nor the cost estimates predict that your car will break down.

IDs are deduplicated within each model-year. The totals above sum those groups, so a recall or document covering several model-years contributes to each applicable group. These are not globally unique campaign or document totals.

Contract threshold

The total quoted contract price plus one per-claim deductible sets the single-claim break-even bill. We count compatible modeled repair midpoints at or above it, but do not convert that count into a breakdown probability, expected saving or recommendation. Coverage and payout limits still decide whether an actual claim would qualify.

Generic parts benchmarks are combined with low, middle and high labor-hour assumptions. City estimates apply a local labor-rate model. The result is a broad planning range, not a quote.

Public NHTSA complaint records are aggregated by make, model and model year. Component shares describe the submitted reports in the dataset and are not failure rates.

Vehicle configuration facts

FuelEconomy.gov supplies 11,636 matched EPA configurations across 2,608 of the 2,742 model-year pages. We summarize fuel type, drive layout, engine range and EPA efficiency. The remaining 134 pages keep configuration fields blank rather than borrowing specifications from another year.

Local labor model

Independent-shop and dealer bands are modeled for 50 metro areas. They provide a consistent geographic adjustment but are not a survey of every local shop.

Long-term temperature, heat, freeze, precipitation and snowfall normals describe regional exposure. They are context only and are not converted into failure probabilities.

FixCatalogue source links and factual metadata

The public sitemap supplies 2,359 vehicle-year paths and 2,931 issue routes. Public-page metadata adds covered years, source evidence labels and citation URLs from 1,221 canonical records. Aliases are joined only when explicit covered years support them. Source labels are not independent diagnoses. Article text, images, owner counts and disallowed APIs are not imported.

Source dates do not mean incident cutoffs

The NHTSA snapshot date records retrieval of the source files, not a common cutoff applied to incidents or submissions. Files update on different schedules. Their HTTP last-modified timestamps are listed separately and are not guaranteed publication or coverage dates.

New data is downloaded into a review package, checked for changed counts and lost matches, and tested before publication. Scheduled collection does not automatically publish a new report.

Interpretation rules

What the results cannot tell you

A break-even comparison shows how large a covered repair would need to be to recover the plan price and deductible. It cannot prove that the repair will happen. Complaint counts cannot establish reliability without fleet-size and reporting controls. Only the signed contract determines whether a repair is covered.

The repair layer separates source-backed national parts and labor ranges. Published labor cost is normalized to the median independent-shop rate in our metro sample, then recalculated for the selected city. When the source publishes a supported-model benchmark, that model-level range calibrates every supported year for that nameplate; it is not a model-year invoice. The location ratio scales the published total, including parts, so the localized result remains an approximation. Model-year EPA configurations remove clearly incompatible scenarios such as a hybrid battery on a gasoline-only year. The remaining figures are planning ranges, not shop quotes or ownership-cost forecasts.
