How we calculate warranty worthiness

The site compares the financial break-even point of a warranty offer with modeled repair exposure. Observed public records remain separate from price estimates and neither is treated as a failure prediction.

Worthiness classification

The quoted plan price plus deductible sets the break-even repair bill. A stronger case means at least 40% of modeled major repairs exceed that threshold at midpoint; worth comparing means 20% to 39%; and a limited financial case means fewer than 20%. This is a scenario screen, not expected-value analysis.

Generic parts benchmarks are combined with low, middle and high labor-hour assumptions. City estimates apply a local labor-rate model. The result is a broad planning range, not a quote.

Public NHTSA complaint records are aggregated by make, model and model year. Component shares describe the submitted reports in the dataset and are not failure rates.

Vehicle configuration facts

FuelEconomy.gov supplies 6,736 matched EPA configurations across 1,403 of the 1,427 model-year pages. We summarize fuel type, drive layout, engine range and EPA efficiency. The remaining 24 pages keep configuration fields blank rather than borrowing specifications from another year.

Local labor model

Independent-shop and dealer bands are modeled for 50 metro areas. They provide a consistent geographic adjustment but are not a survey of every local shop.

Long-term temperature, heat, freeze, precipitation and snowfall normals describe regional exposure. They are context only and are not converted into failure probabilities.

Interpretation rules

What a worthiness result cannot establish

A break-even comparison shows when a covered repair could make the plan pay financially. It cannot prove that the repair will happen. Complaint counts cannot establish reliability without fleet-size and reporting controls. Only the signed contract determines whether a repair is covered.

The repair layer now separates source-backed national parts and labor ranges. Published labor cost is normalized to the median independent-shop rate in our metro sample, then recalculated for the selected city. When the source publishes a benchmark for one of our supported models, that model range calibrates the result. Model-year EPA configurations remove clearly incompatible scenarios such as a hybrid battery on a gasoline-only year. The remaining figures are planning ranges, not shop quotes or ownership-cost forecasts.
