Scenario assumptions: 100% of this repair eligible if approved; $100 deductible; no payout cap assumed. A denied claim or no repair means no reimbursement. Any claimed repair must occur during coverage and after the waiting period. This is not an extra bill added to the average budget; maintenance and other bills are outside this graph.

Why consider a plan even when average costs are lower?

A large covered repair can be difficult to pay for all at once. If you can comfortably fund repairs yourself, a repair fund may suit you better. If you choose protection, check the covered parts, exclusions and claims process.

Some plans reimburse you later, so you may still need to pay the shop first. A new plan generally will not cover an existing problem. FTC: what to check before buying →

3 · The full 5 years budget

Average repair costs vs. warranty cost

Based on published average repair and maintenance costs, allow about $2,140 over 5 years. The illustrative warranty premium is $2,500 for the same period.

Repairs & maintenance$2,140$428/year × 5 years
Honda brand average; model figure unavailable
Estimated warranty premium$2,500Scaled from a Chaiz Honda example, not a quote
Extra cost with a warranty$1,095After assumed exclusions and deductibles

Paying for repairs yourself is $1,095 cheaper in this scenario.

Without a plan: $2,140. With a plan: $3,235 ($2,500 premium + $735 left for you to pay). A plan may still help with a large covered bill, but these averages do not show a saving.

Assumes 75% of the budget qualifies for coverage and 2 approved claims, with $100 per claim. You can change these assumptions. They do not tell us how much your contract covers or how many claims you will make. Maintenance and excluded repairs remain your cost.

Change the average-budget assumptions

The plan price and deductible are shared with the single-repair check above. Change the price or deductible. Use a contract covering the full 5 years, including all required payments and finance charges. Changing the years clears the quoted price. The claim example spreads eligible costs evenly across approved claims; actual bills, limits and per-visit rules can change the payout. Blank price fields restore the planning examples.

Where these estimates come from

Repair budget: No model-specific annual figure is loaded for this car. We use RepairPal's Honda brand average. RepairPal source. We multiply the annual amount by your selected years without an inflation or aging adjustment. Year, mileage and location do not adjust this average; the separate repair scenarios above use available vehicle and local data.

Premium: Chaiz illustrates $1,500 for 3 years of Honda protection. We divide by three and multiply by your chosen years. Chaiz price example. Scaling a price does not establish availability or the price of a contract with that term.

Savings: assumed reimbursement minus the premium. Coverage percentage and claim count are scenario choices, not findings from our database. With no approved claims, you receive no reimbursement and the whole premium is an added cost. Sources checked September 5, 2026.

The unlucky pays more

You drive one car. An average describes many.

The comparison above starts with published average repair and maintenance costs, or the annual budget you enter. Your actual bills could be much lower or much higher. Two owners of the same model can have very different repair costs.

  • You could come out ahead with a plan. If approved claim payments, after deductibles and contract limits, exceed the full premium, the plan saves you money. One large covered repair could make that happen.
  • You could pay more with a plan. If claim payments don't cover the premium, the plan adds to your total cost. With no approved claims, you pay the premium and get no repair reimbursement. An excluded repair can leave you paying both the bill and the premium.

Those outcomes are not necessarily equally likely. An average alone cannot tell us your chances of either, and our data does not establish your car's odds of a major repair or of saving money with a plan. The graph above tests possible outcomes; it does not predict them.

The bottom line: Use the averages to compare costs, then decide how much you are willing to pay for covered protection against a bill you might never get.

How to read your result

How the two comparisons work

The single-repair check compares one hypothetical bill with the full plan premium, deductible, eligible share and payout cap. At break-even, savings are zero. No repair or a denied claim leaves the full premium as an added cost. That bill is not added to the separate average-based budget below.

We multiply the available annual repair and maintenance average by your selected years. Where a model average is unavailable, the result identifies the broader brand or all-vehicle reference. We do not predict an individual car's failures.

The premium is a published example scaled to your time frame, not an offer for your vehicle. Replace it with the full price of a quote covering that period. A five-year budget does not establish that a five-year plan is available.

Potential savings subtract the premium from assumed reimbursement. Maintenance, excluded work and deductibles stay in your budget. Change the coverage and claims assumptions, including zero claims, to see how much the answer depends on them.
