Cost and coverage

Which repair costs could coverage help with?

Emissions repairs range from one sensor to a costly catalytic converter. Manufacturer emissions coverage and the cause of failure can matter more than the age of the service contract.

The 2 repair estimates in this category put parts at $347 to $2,133.

Modeled repair labor ranges from 0.6300172746672086 to 2.3507096162314127 hours. At the $147.62 median metro rate, that is $93 to $347 before parts and any separately listed diagnosis.

Check federal and state emissions coverage first. Then ask how the exact agreement treats mechanical failure, contamination, impact damage and damage caused by another component. For theft, ask your auto insurer whether the loss qualifies under your policy.

Documented conditions

An exhaust symptom is not a converter diagnosis

An exhaust drone, an emissions code and a damaged catalytic converter can require different work. A code describes a detected condition; it does not by itself identify the failed part.

Have the shop explain its tests and the engine or emissions configuration used in the estimate. Ask about applicable manufacturer or emissions coverage before authorizing a paid replacement.

Exhaust drone on takeoff or light acceleration

Lexus RX 350 · 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022

A low drone during takeoff is the sound described in Lexus's revised center-pipe bulletin, particularly under gentle acceleration.

2.5 Turbo engine oil level drops between services

Affected scope
Specified 2021 Mazda CX-5 vehicles with the 2.5 Turbo engine. For US vehicles, the bulletin lists VINs below JM3KF******472325 produced before September 14, 2021. Separate VIN ranges apply in Canada and Mexico
Manufacturer check or remedy
A qualified engine technician confirms the low level and checks for external leakage. When the bulletin applies, the technician installs eight improved exhaust valve seals with the specified tools.
Safety and eligibility limits in this source
  • The oil-pressure warning remains on after startup
  • The dipstick shows no oil or the level falls rapidly after topping up
  • The engine knocks, rattles loudly, smokes heavily or loses power
  • This repair involves the valvetrain and strict piston-position, spring and keeper procedures. It is not suitable for a basic DIY repair.
  • A low oil-pressure warning is more urgent than a level reminder. Shut the engine off if oil pressure is lost or mechanical noise begins.
