Model records

What changes the warranty calculation

The BMW X3 records contain 946 submitted complaints across 12 matched model years. The median is 82.5 reports per matched year. NHTSA source snapshot: 2026-10-18.

The 2019 record contains 171 complaint reports, the highest raw count among matched years here; other years may tie. Vehicle sales and time on the road differ, so this comparison does not establish a failure rate.

Engine replacement or major internal repair has the highest arithmetic midpoint for parts in the applicable planning estimates, at $8,000 before labor. Confirm the configuration and remaining factory coverage before using this broad estimate to compare a service contract.

90 recall/model-year entries. A campaign can cover several years; the unique campaign count removes that repetition. Missing model-name matches remain unavailable.

Coolant-line leak in extreme cold

Low coolant or a fresh puddle at 5°F (minus 15°C) or colder appears in BMW's quick-connect O-ring bulletin.

BMW SIB 17 03 20 applies to specified G01 X3 vehicles built through March 31, 2019 when a coolant leak is confirmed at or below 5°F (minus 15°C). The bulletin attributes the condition to quick-connect O-rings that may not seal in extreme cold. It is not a general explanation for coolant loss in warmer weather.

Symptoms to compare
  • Low high-temperature or low-temperature coolant reservoir
  • Coolant visible under the vehicle during extreme cold
  • Check-control message ID166 asking to top up coolant
  • Stored dry-running protection or A/C compressor faults listed in the bulletin

Other ways owners describe it: BMW leaks coolant only when freezing; coolant puddle after cold night; top up coolant warning in winter; X3 coolant hose leaking in cold; low temperature coolant warning; coolant disappears below zero.

Diagnostic trouble codes: 20A201, 20A209, 80120A. A code identifies a condition to investigate, not a part to replace.

Which vehicles the source covers
  • BMW G01 X3 vehicles built through March 31, 2019
  • Confirmed coolant leak at or below 5°F (minus 15°C)
  • Engine-specific hose attachments in the bulletin must be followed

The bulletin uses build date, outside temperature and confirmation of a leak rather than mileage.

Manufacturer position and diagnosis

BMW directs technicians to pressure-check both cooling circuits and replace the complete set of listed coolant lines for the applicable engine when a qualifying cold-weather leak is confirmed.

Pressure-test both cooling circuitsCooling-system specialist · Workshop diagnosis and hose replacement

A BMW technician should confirm the leak under the bulletin conditions, test the high and low temperature circuits, then replace the engine-specific coolant lines listed in the attachment.

Record temperature and cold fluid levelBasic observation · 5 minutes

Record the overnight temperature, warning text and location of any puddle. Photograph reservoir levels only after the engine is completely cold.

Limit: Never open either cooling circuit while hot or pressurized.

Manufacturer diagnostic bulletin2019

Active grille air-flap warning or fault

An engine light with active air-flap faults fits BMW's diagnostic bulletin for affected X3 vehicles produced through August 2019.

BMW's SIB 51 21 19 covers G01 X3 vehicles produced up to August 2019 when upper or lower active cooling flaps store faults. It lists hardware and software causes, with separate checks for the actuator and lower flap assembly. The required repair depends on the stored codes and functional test rather than appearance alone.

Symptoms to compare
  • Check-control message related to cooling or air flaps
  • Malfunction indicator lamp with active air-flap codes
  • Upper or lower grille shutters do not complete a commanded test

Other ways owners describe it: BMW grille shutters stuck; check engine light for radiator blinds; active grille flap warning; front vents not opening; cooling flap malfunction message; shutters behind kidney grille broken.

Diagnostic trouble codes: 138402, 279B00, 138220, 13820D, 13820E, 21B043, 138207. A code identifies a condition to investigate, not a part to replace.

Which vehicles the source covers
  • BMW G01 X3 vehicles produced up to August 2019
  • The stored codes and upper or lower flap location determine the repair

BMW specifies a production cutoff and fault-code path, not a mileage threshold.

Manufacturer position and diagnosis

BMW directs technicians to identify the stored faults and run the radiator-blind functional test. The result determines whether the vehicle needs software or a specific flap component.

Run BMW's fault-specific test planBMW diagnostic equipment · Diagnosis before parts

Retrieve the stored BMW fault codes and run the radiator-blind functional test. The bulletin may call for software, an upper actuator or a complete lower assembly depending on the result.

Limit: Replacing the complete grille assembly without the prescribed test can replace the wrong component.

Check for obvious external obstructionSimple visual check · 3 minutes

With the engine off, look through the grille for packed leaves, ice or visible impact damage. Photograph what you see for the technician.

Limit: Do not put fingers or tools into the moving flap mechanism.

Confirm who pays before authorizing work

A recall remedy follows the campaign and VIN eligibility. A service bulletin provides diagnosis or repair instructions; it does not by itself promise payment. Manufacturer warranty extensions and support programs have their own conditions.
