Buying a vehicle service contract in Rhode Island

Rhode Island's Consumer Service Contracts chapter includes motor vehicles in its consumer-product definition. Section 6-57-2 says the defined service contracts, maintenance agreements and vehicle theft protection warranties are not insurance unless insurance rules are expressly made applicable.

Do not treat a service-contract seller's insurance terminology as proof that you are buying an insurance policy. Read the product definition and actual agreement. The Attorney General provides a consumer complaint route; keep the provider's legal name, receipt and written claim or cancellation response.
