Buying a vehicle service contract in Massachusetts

Massachusetts treats automobile service contracts differently from many other service contracts. Its Division of Insurance says a contract backed by an unrelated third-party obligor is an insurance product and the company must be licensed or approved as an insurer.

A manufacturer or dealer contract can fall outside that treatment when the manufacturer or dealer is itself the obligor. Identify who owes performance before checking authorization. A general service-contract registration is not the same as the insurance authorization required for a third-party automobile product.
