Buying a vehicle service contract in Illinois

Illinois service contracts must state that the holder may cancel. Under section 35 of the Service Contract Act, cancellation within 30 days with no service provided gives a refund less a stated cancellation fee; that fee cannot exceed the smaller of $50 or 10% of the contract price.

Later cancellation provides a prorated refund for the unexpired term using the measure disclosed in the agreement, less service received and the permitted fee. Ask for the calculation in writing. Some vehicle-protection products have separate purchase-price refund treatment.
